British Championship Round at Cuerden Park 18/05/1986.
Taken from Changing of the Guard 1983-1989.
This was the day that saw Tony Caig come back from a six week lay off, to holeshot the first race on his blue Maico, and here is the picture that adorns Bill Browns office. He was shadowed by Thorpe and Banks, with Thorpe taking the lead on lap two, to take race one. Spence came through the pack to second after getting past Anstie who took third. Perry Leask had a meteoric ride from 38th to finish 12th. Caig eventually finished fourth for his best ever finish. Caig holeshot race two as well, but was deposed by Thorpe on the opening lap, who went on to win. Spence kept his powder dry until the closing two laps where he powered past Nicoll and Anstie for another second place. Mark Banks led race three, until the invincible Thorpe came through to win. Jem Whatley on the Cagiva 250 took second from Banks, Anstie and Spence. Rob Herring seems unbeatable in the Support Class as he took another brace of wins to add to his maximum at round one. Derek Roberts had two seconds and Scott Gardner had two thirds.
